Top 5 Heart Foods - Easily available

Updated: Nov 2, 2018

1. OATMEAL

Oatmeal may provide us with special digestive benefits, partly in connection with their ability to increase the viscosity of our digestive tract contents.

As a result of this improved viscosity, we get improved digestion and absorption of nutrients, including some of the key cardiovascular-support nutrients present in oats.

2. FISH MEAL

Fish contain unsaturated fatty acids, which, when substituted for saturated fatty acids such as those in meat, may lower your cholesterol. But the main beneficial nutrient appears to be omega-3 fatty acids in fatty fish such as salmon, lake trout, mackerel, herring, sardines and tuna.

Omega-3 fatty acids are a type of unsaturated fatty acid that may reduce inflammation throughout the body. Inflammation in the body can damage your blood vessels and lead to heart disease and strokes.

3. TOMATOES

Tomatoes are a very nutritional food source rich in anti-oxidants, vitamin A and C, folic acid and beta-carotene. They are also rich in a substance called lycopene. Lycopene can be found in other fruits and vegetables such as watermelon or red carrots.

In a study of 212 patients with heart failure, higher lycopene intake from tomatoes was associated with improved survival. In fact, patients with low lycopene intake were 3.3 times more likely to die compared to those with high lycopene intake.

5. HEALTH SUPPLEMENTS (CoEnzyme Q10)

Look for high dose EPA and DHA fish oil supplements. (Recommended 500mg both combined for healthy adults)

Alternatively, for those who had cardiovascular disease (CVD), may choose CoEnzyme Q10 as their heart health supplement.

CoQ10 has been used to treat many different conditions. There's evidence that CoQ10 supplements can lower pressure slightly. CoQ10 is also used to treat other heart conditions, possibly helping to improve some symptoms and lessen future cardiac risks
